EXAMINER REASONING

Population geography is fundamental to understanding human geography — it explains where people live, why they live there, and how populations change. The world's population of ~8.1 billion (2024) is unevenly distributed — only 30% of the earth's land is inhabited, and most people live in a few clusters.

2023-26: India became the world's most populous country in April 2023, surpassing China — this was widely discussed in UPSC 2023-24. The UN World Population Prospects 2024 revised peak population downwards. India's TFR falling to 2.0 (replacement level) means the demographic dividend window is closing for some states (Kerala TFR 1.7, Tamil Nadu 1.6) while others still high (UP 3.0, Bihar 3.2). The Economic Survey 2023-24 dedicated a chapter to leveraging the demographic dividend — emphasising skilling, education, and employment creation. Aging Asia — Japan's population declined by 800,000 in 2023; China's population now declining (first time since 1961). India's National Population Policy is under revision. The population-migration nexus — India has the largest diaspora globally (~32 million).
