July 19, 2026
7 min read

TOPIC CLASSIFICATION

Subject: Geography - Population Geography
Sub-topic: World Population Distribution, Growth Patterns, Demographic Theories (Malthus, Marx, Demographic Transition Model), Population Policies
Mains GS Paper-I: Geography - human geography, population distribution, demographic trends, and theories.

EXAMINER REASONING

Population geography is fundamental to understanding human geography - it explains where people live, why they live there, and how populations change. Prelims tests: population density trends, Demographic Transition Model stages, fertility/mortality indicators, census data. Mains demands: (a) spatial distribution patterns - world population clusters (East Asia, South Asia, Europe, North America), (b) factors influencing distribution (physical, economic, historical), (c) theories - Malthusian theory, Marxian critique, Demographic Transition Model (DTM), (d) population policies - China's one-child policy → three-child policy, India's National Population Policy 2000, (e) demographic dividend and its window of opportunity. The examiner's favourite framing is: "Is the demographic dividend an opportunity or a challenge for India?"
