Sub-topic: World Climate Types - Classification, Factors, and Regional Distribution
Mains GS Paper-I: Salient features of world's physical geography; climate and weather; climatic regions.

EXAMINER REASONING

Climatic classification is a core physical geography topic. Prelims tests: the Koeppen classification letters (Af, Am, Aw, BSh, BWh, Csa, Csb, etc.), characteristic features of each climate type, and world map locations. Mains demands: (a) comparison of tropical vs. temperate climates, (b) factors affecting climate (latitude, altitude, distance from sea, ocean currents, pressure belts), (c) Koeppen's scheme in detail - why it suits vegetation, (d) climate change - how shifting climate zones affect agriculture and ecosystems. The Koeppen-Geiger classification is the most UPSC-relevant framework.
