UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage: India's List

Introduction

The UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003) defines ICH as practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, and skills that communities recognise as part of their cultural heritage. India ratified the convention in 2005. As of 2026, India has 15 elements inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The UNESCO Convention Framework

• Five Domains: (a) Oral traditions and expressions, (b) Performing arts, (c) Social practices, rituals, and festive events, (d) Knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe, (e) Traditional craftsmanship.
• Three Lists: Representative List, List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding, Register of Good Safeguarding Practices.
• Criteria for Inscription: The element constitutes ICH, is transmitted across generations, is compatible with human rights, and communities have given free prior and informed consent.

India's Inscribed Elements (Chronological Order)

1. Kutiyattam, Sanskrit Theatre (2008)

• Domain: Performing arts
• Region: Kerala
• Description: Oldest surviving Sanskrit theatre tradition, performed in Koothambalam (temple theatres). Only tradition with continuous history from ancient period. Uses elaborate gestures (mudras) and facial expressions.
• Community: Chakyars and Nangiars (women performers).
