NCERT Books: What to Read and What to Skip

Introduction

NCERT textbooks are the foundation of UPSC preparation-they provide authentic, accessible, and syllabus-aligned content at the right level of depth. However, not every NCERT is useful, and reading each cover-to-cover may waste precious time. This guide provides a definitive list of what to read, what to skip, and how to approach each subject.

Why NCERTs Are Essential

  • Authenticity: Government-published, fact-checked, non-controversial
  • Syllabus alignment: Directly maps to UPSC syllabus (especially History, Geography, Polity)
  • Conceptual clarity: Simple language builds strong fundamentals
  • Cost: Free (PDFs available on NCERT website)
  • Prelims source: Many direct questions from NCERTs (especially Geography, Science)
  • No interpretation: Unlike reference books, no "author bias"

Trick to Reading NCERTs

Active Reading Framework:

  1. Preview: Skim headings, diagrams, summary boxes (5 min)
  2. Read: Full chapter with highlighter (key terms, dates, names, definitions)
  3. Summarize: Make notes (20% of original - bullet points, diagrams, flowcharts)
  4. Recall: Close book, recall main points (active recall - most important step)
  5. Connect: Link to current affairs / other subjects (interlinking)
  6. Review: Revisit notes after 1 day, 7 days, 30 days (spaced repetition)
