5 min read

Introduction

Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) is a global mass movement launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP26 in Glasgow (2021) and formally unveiled on October 20, 2022, with the UN Secretary-General in attendance. It aims to mobilise individuals and communities worldwide to adopt pro-environment lifestyles, representing a shift from wasteful consumption to mindful utilisation of natural resources.

Conceptual Framework

  • Collective action at individual, community, and institutional levels
  • Complement national climate policies with bottom-up behavioural change

Core Philosophy

  • Rooted in India's ancient traditions of environmental stewardship (Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam)
  • Shift from 'lifestyle for comfort' to 'lifestyle for the planet'
  • Behavioural economics: Nudging individuals toward sustainable choices

The Three Ps

  • Pro-Planet People (P3): Individuals aware of their environmental impact
  • Pro-Planet Communities: Neighbourhoods, schools, offices adopting sustainable practices
  • Pro-Planet Governance: Policies enabling and incentivising sustainable lifestyles
