Map-Based Questions: Strategy for UPSC Prelims

Introduction

Map-based questions are a consistent feature of the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination. Typically 5-10 questions in Paper I (Geography section) and occasionally in Paper II (CSAT). These questions test spatial awareness, location knowledge, and the ability to correlate geographical features with economic, environmental, and cultural contexts.

Types of Map-Based Questions

1. Location Identification

  • Identify a place marked on a map (national park, dam, river, mountain, city)
  • Example: "Which of the following is correctly matched with its location?"

2. Feature Matching

  • Match geographical features with their locations
  • Example: Match Tiger Reserves with states

3. Directional/Relative Location

  • Questions about relative positions: "Which river flows between X and Y?"
  • Example: "Which state lies to the east of X?"

4. Thematic Maps

  • Distribution of resources (coal, petroleum, iron ore)
  • Agricultural regions, monsoon patterns
  • Population density, tribal concentrations

5. Current Events on Map

  • Places in news (disaster zones, border disputes, new projects)
  • Example: "Which country shares a border with the recently opened Zojila Pass?"

6. Physical Features

  • Mountain ranges, peaks, passes, plateaus
  • Rivers and their...
