ICAR Classification of Indian Soils:
1. Alluvial Soils (43% of India's area): Most extensive and agriculturally important. Found in Indo-Gangetic plains, Brahmaputra valley, and coastal plains. Formed by deposition of river sediments. High fertility - rich in potash, lime; poor in nitrogen and organic matter. Two types: Khadar (newer alluvium - finer, deposited in floodplains) and Bhangar (older alluvium - coarser, above flood level). Supports: wheat, rice, sugarcane, pulses, oilseeds.
2. Black Soils / Regur (15% of area): Found in the Deccan trap region (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra). Derived from weathering of basaltic lava. Characteristics: clayey, deep, dark colour, high moisture-holding capacity, self-ploughing (cracks in dry season, expands in wet). Rich in: calcium carbonate, potash, lime; poor in phosphorus and organic matter. Best for: cotton, sugarcane, tobacco, citrus.
3. Red & Yellow Soils (18.5% of area): Found in parts of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra, Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh. Formed by weathering of crystalline/metamorphic rocks (granite, gneiss). Red colour from iron oxide diffusion; yellow when hydrated. Sandy to loamy texture. Deficient in: nitrogen, phosphorus, organic matter. Suitable for: millets, groundnut, pulses, potato.
4. Laterite & Lateritic Soils (8% of area): Found in Western Ghats, North-East hills, parts of Odisha, Karnataka, Kerala, Assam. Formed under tropical heavy rainfall → intense leaching. Rich in iron and aluminium oxides; poor in silica, lime, organic matter. Deep, acidic. Needs fertilisation. Suitable for: rice (in valleys), tea, coffee, rubber, coconut (with fertilisers).
5. Arid & Desert Soils (6% of area): Found in Rajasthan, Gujarat (Kutch), Haryana, Punjab. Sandy to loamy, low moisture, low organic matter. High salt content. Wind erosion dominant. Suitable for drought-resistant crops: bajra, pulses, guar. Irrigation → high productivity (Indira Gandhi Canal in Rajasthan).
6. Saline & Alkaline Soils: Found in drier parts of Indo-Gangetic plains, Punjab, Haryana, UP, Rajasthan. Also in coastal areas (Kutch, Sundarbans). High concentration of sodium, calcium, magnesium salts - harmful to crops. Causes: poor drainage, canal irrigation without drainage, seawater intrusion. Reclaimable by: gypsum treatment, leaching, drainage, salt-tolerant crops.
7. Peaty & Marshy Soils: Found in regions with heavy rainfall and poor drainage - Kerala (Kuttanad), coastal Odisha, Sundarbans, NE India (Brahmaputra valley). High organic matter (20-40%), acidic. Kuttanad region: rice cultivation below sea level.
8. Forest & Mountain Soils: Found in Himalayan region, Western/Eastern Ghats, NE hills. Thin, immature, highly variable. Forested areas have high organic matter. Deforestation causes severe erosion. Suitable for: terrace cultivation of rice, maize, potatoes in valleys; horticulture on slopes.
