UNESCO 2003 Convention Framework
The Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003) entered into force 2006. India ratified in 2005. Three lists:
- Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - visibility, awareness, diversity
- List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding - endangered, immediate action needed
- Register of Good Safeguarding Practices - successful models for others to emulate
Criteria for Inscription:
- R.1: Intangible cultural heritage as per Article 2 (oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, festive events, knowledge/practices concerning nature, traditional craftsmanship)
- R.2: Consent and participation of communities/groups/individuals
- R.3: Safeguarding measures proposed
- R.4: Community participation in nomination
- R.5: Included in national inventory
India's Nodal Agency: Sangeet Natak Akademi (Ministry of Culture) - prepares dossiers, coordinates with UNESCO.
