Most confused. The Great Bath vs. Great Granary — which was at Mohenjo-daro vs. Harappa. The Great Bath (Mohenjo-daro) is the most famous structure. The Great Granary is at Harappa. Dholavira (Gujarat) has a unique water reservoir system — not found at Mohenjo-daro. Kalibangan (Rajasthan) has ploughed fields and fire altars — unique features not replicated elsewhere.
Key anchor. IVC's most UPSC-relevant feature: town planning based on the grid system (chessboard pattern), with streets cutting at right angles, advanced drainage (underground brick-lined channels with manholes covered by stone slabs), and standardised burnt bricks (ratio 1:2:4). No other contemporary civilization had comparable urban sanitation — this is the examiner's favourite comparison with Mesopotamia and Egypt.
Current affairs hook. The Rakhigarhi DNA study (2018-2024) — ancient DNA from the largest Harappan site in Haryana showed no evidence of steppe pastoralist (Aryan) migration causing IVC decline. This challenges the Aryan Invasion/Migration Theory and has been a major UPSC focus since. Also: ongoing excavations at Bhirrana (Haryana) pushing IVC origins back to 7500 BCE.
Mains hinge. Frame around: "How did the Indus Valley Civilization's decline reflect the interplay of environmental and anthropogenic factors?" Show that no single theory explains the decline — ecological degradation (deforestation, over-exploitation), climatic change (weakened monsoon), tectonic activity (flooding/drying of Ghaggar-Hakra), Aryan migration (contested), and trade collapse all contributed. The only safe Mains position: a combination of factors, with climate change as the primary driver supported by recent evidence.

The Indus Valley Civilization (also called Harappan Civilization) flourished from c. 2600-1900 BCE in the Indus River basin and Ghaggar-Hakra river valley, covering parts of modern Pakistan, northwest India, and Afghanistan. It is one of the three great Bronze Age civilizations alongside Egypt and Mesopotamia — and the most extensive (covering ~1.5 million sq km, larger than both combined).
The hallmark of IVC was its astonishingly consistent town planning. Major cities (Mohenjo-daro, Harappa, Dholavira, Lothal, Kalibangan, Rakhigarhi) followed a grid pattern with two parts: the Citadel (raised western mound — administrative/religious centre) and the Lower Town (eastern residential area). Streets ran north-south and east-west, intersecting at right angles. Houses had multiple rooms, wells, and bathrooms with drains connected to covered street sewers. The drainage system — underground brick-lined channels with inspection manholes — was the most advanced in the ancient world.

Economy and Society: IVC was primarily agricultural (wheat, barley, cotton — first cotton cultivation in the world), supplemented by pastoralism (cattle, sheep, goats). Extensive trade networks existed with Mesopotamia (Tell Brak, Ur), the Persian Gulf (Dilmun/Bahrain), and Central Asia (Turquoise, lapis lazuli). Seals (steatite, in script) were used for trade. The civilization was notably egalitarian: no large palaces, temples, or monumental royal burials exist.
Religion: Mother Goddess figurines, Pashupati seal (proto-Shiva seated in yogic posture), worship of animals (bulls, unicorn), sacred trees (pipal), and fire altars (Kalibangan).
Decline Theories: IVC declined around 1900 BCE, fragmenting into late Harappan village cultures. Five major theories compete:
Aryan Invasion Theory (Mortimer Wheeler, 1940s): Aryans invaded, destroyed cities, and Rig Vedic references to 'Pur' (forts) and Indra as 'destroyer of forts' (Purandara) supposedly support this. Counter-evidence: No archaeological evidence of large-scale violence; no Aryan material culture in IVC levels; Rakhigarhi DNA (2024) shows no steppe migration during the decline phase.
Climate Change / Drought Theory (Dominant View): The Indian monsoon weakened after 2000 BCE, reducing water flow in the Ghaggar-Hakra river system. Agriculture collapsed, cities became unsustainable, and the population dispersed eastward. Evidence: Palaeoclimate data from Arabian Sea sediment cores, Lake Kotla Dahar (Haryana) isotope analysis, and Gharndi glacial studies all show monsoon weakening from ~2200 BCE.
Tectonic Activity / River Drying: Tectonic uplift (Himalayan movements) redirected the Sutlej and Yamuna rivers away from the Ghaggar-Hakra, desiccating the region. IVC settlements concentrated along this river system — its decline forced migration. Evidence: Satellite imagery shows palaeochannels of a lost river (mythical Saraswati) corresponding to IVC settlement patterns.
Ecological Degradation (Gordon Childe, Fairservis): Over-exploitation of resources — deforestation for brick-making (burnt bricks), over-grazing, soil salinisation from irrigation — made the environment unsustainable for urban populations.
Trade Collapse: Decline of Mesopotamian trade routes (~1800 BCE) cut IVC off from external markets, reducing economic viability of urban centres. Evidence: Persian Gulf seal distribution drops sharply after 2000 BCE.
Current Scholarly Consensus: No single theory. Primary driver: climate change (weakened monsoon) → agricultural decline → de-urbanisation → eastward/southward migration. The IVC did not disappear — it transformed into late Harappan cultures (Cemetery H, Jhukar, Rangpur), contributing cultural elements to later Indian civilisation (Pashupati Yoga, pipal worship, goddess cult).

The Rakhigarhi ancient DNA study (published 2018-2024, the first Harappan genome sequenced) is the most important archaeological discovery relevant to UPSC in recent years. DNA extracted from a female skeleton (Rakhigarhi, 2300 BCE) showed: (1) Iranian-related ancestry (early farmers who migrated into India ~8000 BCE), (2) no steppe pastoralist ancestry (suggesting Aryan migration, if it happened, post-dated IVC decline). This shifted the scholarly consensus away from the Aryan Invasion Theory and towards the climate-change-driven decline narrative.
The excavation at Bhirrana (Haryana), published in Science (2016), pushed the origin of the Early Harappan phase back to 7500 BCE — making it as old as Mehrgarh (Balochistan). This rewrites the origin timeline: earlier scholars placed IVC origins at 3200 BCE.
The government's Saraswati river revival project (ongoing) has indirect links to IVC decline — the Ghaggar-Hakra river system that sustained IVC settlement is being studied for groundwater recharge. The Haryana government's excavation funding for Rakhigarhi has increased significantly (2023-24), with a museum planned by 2027.

"The Indus Valley script has been deciphered." No. The script remains undeciphered despite over 100+ attempts. The longest inscription (Dholavira signboard) has 10 symbols. Claims of decipherment (e.g., by Asko Parpola, Rajesh Rao, or S.R. Rao) remain contested and are not accepted by mainstream archaeology.
"The IVC was a unified empire under a single ruler." No evidence of kings, empires, or centralised rule. No palaces or royal tombs found. IVC was likely a collection of city-states or a confederation of chiefdoms, with coordinated trade and cultural norms but no single political authority.
"Harappan cities were not fortified." False. Many cities had fortifications (Harappa, Kalibangan, Dholavira). However, these were more for flood protection and town demarcation than military defence — no evidence of large-scale warfare exists.
"All IVC cities had the same layout (Citadel + Lower Town)." No. Dholavira (Gujarat) had a unique three-part division — Citadel, Middle Town, and Lower Town. Lothal had an oval shape. Banawali had a trapezoidal fortification. The model fits major cities but not all.
"The IVC people were worshippers of Shiva." Oversimplification. The Pashupati seal shows a figure seated in yogic posture surrounded by animals. It is interpreted as a 'proto-Shiva' or 'Lord of Beasts', but equating it directly with the Puranic Shiva is anachronistic.
