Indian Cinema: History, Social Impact, and Cultural Export

Introduction

Indian cinema is the world's largest film industry by number of films produced annually, with over 1,500 feature films per year in languages including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Bhojpuri, and others. From the first silent film Raja Harishchandra (1913) to the global phenomenon of RRR and Pathaan, Indian cinema has evolved through distinct phases.

Historical Evolution

Silent Era (1896-1930)

  • 1896 - Lumière Brothers' films screened at Watson's Hotel, Bombay.
  • 1913 - Dadasaheb Phalke released Raja Harishchandra, India's first indigenous feature film.
  • Key silent films - Kaliya Mardan (1919, Phalke), Bilwamangal (1919, Rustomji Dhotiwala), Shakuntala (1920, Suchet Singh), Bhakt Vidur (1921, Kanjibhai Rathod).
  • Notable figures - Dhiren Ganguly, Jamshedji F. Madan (established Madan Theatres, the first studio chain).

Transition to Talkies (1931-1946)

  • 1931 - Alam Ara (Ardeshir Irani), India's first sound film. Dialogue in Hindustani.
  • Major studios - Bombay Talkies (Himanshu Rai), Prabhat Studios (V. Shantaram), New Theatres (Calcutta).
  • Social reform themes - V. Shantaram's Aadmi (1939), Duniya Na Mane (1937).
  • Mythological cycle - Sant Tulsidas (1939), Bharat Milap (1942).
