Green Buildings and Sustainable Architecture in India

July 19, 2026
5 min read

Introduction

Green buildings - structures that use environmentally responsible and resource-efficient processes throughout their lifecycle - are gaining momentum in India as the country urbanizes rapidly. The Indian green building market is among the top five globally, with over 10 billion square feet of green building footprint registered with the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). With buildings accounting for 40% of India's energy consumption and 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable architecture is a critical climate mitigation strategy.

What is a Green Building?

Core Principles

  • Site planning and design: Efficient land use, minimal ecological disruption
  • Water efficiency: Rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, low-flow fixtures
  • Energy efficiency: Passive design, solar panels, energy-efficient HVAC and lighting
  • Materials: Recycled, locally sourced, low-embodied-energy materials
  • Indoor environmental quality: Natural ventilation, daylight access, low-VOC materials
  • Waste management: Construction waste recycling, segregation, compost systems
  • Operation and maintenance: Smart systems, green cleaning, occupant engagement

Lifecycle Approach

  • Pre-construction: Site selection, design optimisation, material sourcing
  • Construction: Low-impact methods, waste reduction, dust control
  • Operation: Energy/water monitoring, green maintenance, occupant health
  • End-of-life: Deconstruction, material reuse/recycling, site restoration
