Diamond Triangle: Mining, Ethics, and Economic Significance

July 19, 2026
5 min read

Introduction

The term 'Diamond Triangle' in India refers to a diamond-bearing region spanning parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, particularly the Panna district in MP and the Raipur-Bilaspur belt in Chhattisgarh. This region hosts India's only organized diamond mining operations and has significant implications for the country's mineral economy, tribal welfare, and environmental sustainability.

Geological Context

Kimberlite Pipes

  • Diamonds are found in kimberlite and lamproite pipes - volcanic rock formations
  • The Panna Diamond Belt extends over 2,000 sq km along the Ken River
  • Major kimberlite clusters: Hinota, Majhgawan, Bhuiyan, and Ramkheria
  • The Majhgawan pipe (Panna, MP) is India's only active diamond mine

Diamond Potential

  • India's estimated diamond reserves: ~1-1.5 million carats
  • The Panna region alone has estimated resources of 1.2 million carats
  • New exploration in Chhattisgarh (Tokapal, Bhejripadar) has revealed kimberlite fields
  • The Tokapal kimberlite is one of the largest uncovered kimberlite fields in the world

Mining Operations

Major Mines

  • Majhgawan Diamond Mine (Panna, MP): India's only mechanised diamond mine
  • Operated by the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC)
  • Production: ~30,000-40,000 carats annually (varies year to year)
  • Mining method: Open-cast and underground mining
